Bookbinding refers to the final stage of book production following the completion of the printing process. It encompasses all the steps from arranging and assembling the pages of a book to producing a cover and decorating it. Bookbinding also refers to the process of re-binding an existing book. Until well into the 19th century, books were bound by hand. Today, the majority of covers are produced in industrial mass production. The processes involved have remained the same.
