Buchbinder in Rostock im 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert

After 1530, the number of bookbinders in Rostock increased. Their workshops often remained in the same family for generations. They often worked as booksellers as well. Consequently, both professions were combined into a single trade. Masters frequently stamped their initials onto book covers. In the mid-16th century, Master Dietrich von Lohe created outstanding book covers. His clients included not only the city’s elite but also the Dukes of Mecklenburg. The first books for the university library, founded in 1569, were bound by Master Hans Bolte. With the increasing number of printed books from the second half of the 17th century onwards, the bindings became increasingly simple. They were now mostly made of white parchment. Only rarely can they be attributed to a specific bookbinding workshop.
