The earliest bookbinding workshop documented in Mecklenburg was run by the Michaelite monks. Between 1480 and around 1545, it worked for the Rostock City and University Society as well as other clients. The Dutch-style bindings feature the typical Rostock clasps, which could be engraved with a name on request. Bindings were also produced for their own use in the Dominican, Franciscan and Carthusian monasteries in Rostock. By the second half of the 16th century, numerous bookbinders were known to be active. Their workshops were located in Rostock, Schwerin, Wismar and Güstrow.
