Flugschriften: Buchdruck für Wirtschaft, Politik und Religion

The precursors to newspapers became a mass medium. They disseminated political, religious and social ideas and topics, ranging from the Reformation to natural disasters. Modern printing made large print runs possible, as well as rapid and widespread distribution. Unlike today, pamphlets were sold in the early modern period. A leaflet cost a craftsman’s hourly wage. This was roughly equivalent to the price of two pints of beer or a dozen eggs. Consequently, the leaflet had to capture the public’s attention and therefore often combined images and text.
