The printing press run by the Brothers of the Common Life operated from 1476 to 1533. In this order, secular priests and laypeople had dedicated themselves to the dissemination of knowledge. The Rostock branch was founded in 1462, originating from Münster. A school, a printing press, a bookbindery and a bookshop were also established in Rostock. The Brothers of St Michael taught at the university. In 1476, they printed the first book in Rostock. Fifty-six prints by the Brothers of St Michael are known, 23 of which date from before 1500. The printing house was closed in 1533 as a result of the Reformation.
