During the period of political transition, the press landscape in Rostock was marked by radical upheaval. Whilst established newspapers underwent reform, new democratic newspapers emerged for a short time. The *Ostsee-Zeitung*, as the mouthpiece of the SED district leadership, underwent a transformation into an independent regional newspaper. The *Norddeutsche Neueste Nachrichten* became a regional newspaper. “Der Demokrat”, the CDU’s newspaper, ceased publication in 1991. The “Norddeutsche Zeitung”, the mouthpiece of the LDPD, was also discontinued in 1991. The democratic new beginning of 1989–90 gave rise to the newspapers “Plattform” and “Bürgerrat”, as well as a new edition of the “Mecklenburgische Volkszeitung”. The new newspapers were intended to reflect the democratic awakening.
