Zeitungen unter politischer Aufsicht

After the Second World War, daily newspapers were only permitted if they were published by the regional branches of approved political parties. The KPD and the SED published the ‘Volkszeitung’ (renamed ‘Landeszeitung’ in 1946 and ‘Ostsee-Zeitung’ in 1952), the CDU published the newspaper ‘Der Demokrat’, the LDPD published the ‘Norddeutsche Zeitung’ and the NDPD published the ‘Norddeutschen Neuesten Nachrichten’. The newspapers were subject to political and state supervision and were subject to censorship. In this way, information was controlled, even though there was officially no censorship in the GDR.
