In this display case, we focus exclusively on the 20th century. Portraits of ships continue to be popular, although modern steamships such as the ‘GRETE CORDS’ are now increasingly being depicted alongside sailing ships. In addition to painting, modelling continues to enjoy great popularity, as the models of the ‘UNDINE’ (1997) and the ‘WARNEMÜNDE’ (around 1975) testify. Shipyards, shipping companies and businesses had ship illustrations printed on pennants, glasses and even Meissen porcelain for the purpose of self-promotion, but also to maintain tradition.
