Depiction of whaling by whalers under the British and US flags. In the 19th century, whales were still primarily caught in order to utilise the oil (also known as fish oil) as a fuel and industrial raw material. As a source of food, whaling usually only played a role for indigenous peoples. Whaling took on industrial proportions in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the result that many whale species are still threatened with extinction today.
