Lithography "The Great Ship-Race from China to London. The Taeping and the Ariel off the Lizard."

Published and printed by Seitz, Wandsbeck, 1866

The first tea harvest of the season was to be delivered from China to London as quickly as possible. This led to an unofficial competition between the fastest (clipper) ships to arrive in London. Additional income and rewards awaited the winner. Bets on the winner were also placed with the London bookmakers. The "Taeping" shown in the foreground won the legendary "Tea Race" of 1866. The "Ariel" in the background was beaten by the "Taeping" by just 20 minutes after a 99-day crossing.
