Lithography "Clipper Ship 'Great Republic'"

Clipper Ship „Great Republic“, Lith. & pub. by Nathaniel Currier, New York, ca. 1853

Built in Boston in 1852/53, the "Great Republic" was the only four-masted clipper barque ever built, the largest clipper ever built and at the time the largest wooden ship in terms of ship's hold size. During loading for the maiden voyage in New York, the ship caught fire due to flying sparks and had to be largely rebuilt. Commissioning was therefore postponed until 1856 and the ship was subsequently used to transport troops during the Crimean War and the American Civil War, among others. From 1869 it was used as the "Denmark" in the East Indies trade. On 5 March 1872, the ship foundered in a storm off the Bermudas and sank.
