Jug (WA/A/41)

English jug or jug made of earthenware. Central image below the spout of a ship (brig) in front of a steep bank. Below it the inscription "Sucess to the Coal Trade". In the 18th/19th century, ceramics with the inscription "Success..." were popular promotional gifts in English harbour towns for merchant sailors from all over the world. Thanks to the transfer printing process developed in England, motifs and inscriptions could be applied to the ceramics quickly and cheaply. At the same time, they provided highly personalised gifts to further strengthen trade relations.
