Bowl (WA/VK/6497)

This bowl was made in England and was probably a sailor's souvenir. The bowl, decorated with three motifs, was made around 1840. It shows two sailing ships (two- and three-masted) and a verse on the back with the following wording:

My Lad is far upon the Sea, his absence makes me mourn. The bark that bears him far from me, i hope will safe Return. And from his earnings I ll save up: if lucky he should be: and then when old with me shall stop, and go no more to sea.

In the donor's family, the bowl was used as a fruit bowl, but also for pickling herring.
